Sharon Barentine, OD is a therapeutic optometrist having finished her sequence of national optometry boards in 1996. She completed her undergraduate training at the University of Central Florida graduating with honors. She then went on to attend the University of Houston College of Optometry under a full scholarship from the United States Air Force. After graduating from optometry school, Dr. Barentine worked in the Air Force, retiring in 2011 at the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Her time in the military saw her stationed in Texas, Louisiana, Tennessee, Virginia, Colorado, North Carolina, and Hawaii. She has been licensed and boarded in each of those states. Upon retiring from the Air Force, she worked at William Beaumont Army Medical Center and developed an interest in treating the ocular effects of traumatic brain injury, visual systems evaluation, and ocular therapeutics. She was also an associate and principal investigator in the CITI Human Research program in 2014.
Dr. Barentine joined Sun Eye Care, PA in 2018. She continues to practice therapeutic optometry, enjoys managing and correcting patients with diplopia and performs full eye exams on adults.
Dr. Barentine is a long-term resident of El Paso. Her parents also were in the military and were stationed in El Paso when she was a child. She graduated from Burgess High School. She enjoys running on the Air Force cross country team and teaches classes as an American Council on Exercise Instructor. She and her husband Neil raise Nigerian dwarf goats and are active in music ministry. Her favorite pastime is spoiling her grandchildren.
